UPDATE 1.55pm: SOUTHWESTERN Victoria will be the first to bear the brunt of a cold snap sweeping across the state today.
A low pressure system building in the Great Australian Bight will arrive in Victoria today bringing with it strong winds and rain, and snow in some areas.
Senior forecaster Scott Williams said the fierce winds were expected to sweep through the city later this afternoon.
?There?s been a steady increase in the winds across the state from the west, but it?s really only the southwest area that is under threat from these strong gusts at the moment,? Mr Williams said.
?In Melbourne, 90-100km/h gusts will probably start late this afternoon and run overnight and probably won?t slow down until tomorrow afternoon.?
Mr Williams said the real wild weather would arrive when the strong winds mixed with the expected downpour.
When those showers come through it will mix with the stronger winds and bring it all down to the ground.
?That?s what we call a squally setup.?
A severe weather warning for damaging winds tomorrow has been issued in the South West, North Central, Wimmera, Central, West and South Gippsland, East Gippsland and North East districts.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Stephen King predicted winds would average about 50-60km/h, with gusts reaching 120km/h tomorrow.
The winds will then ease but continue until Thursday.
The temperature is expected to reach 15C today and then dip to a maximum of 12C in Melbourne tomorrow and Wednesday.
The State Emergency Service is advising people to move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items, and keep clear of fallen power lines.
Mr King said there would be showers off and on all week.
?In contrast to last week, which was fairly mild with temperatures in the high teens, it?s going to be fairly miserable all week,? he said yesterday.
?We are expecting a series of cold fronts across Victoria.
?There will be fairly good snow falls all week, and a good dump on Wednesday.
?But it will be almost blizzardy on the ski fields for a couple of days. It would be best to wait until later in the week (to head there).?
