The San Francisco Department of the Environment (SF Environment) is partnering with the city Assessor-Recorder's office and Energy Upgrade California to launch the SF Home Improvement & Performance (SFHIP) incentive program. The goal of the program is to increase the affordability of "green" home improvements for San Franciscans. San Francisco is one of the only cities in California that provides governmental incentives in addition to state and federal incentives for going solar.
The Assessor-Recorder will send information about the program and rebates via Notices of Assessed Value provided to every homeowner in San Francisco by their office. The hope is that the combination of affordability, environmental benefits AND property value increase will encourage many residents to invest in renewable resources. Qualifying projects including: adding insolution; air sealing windows, walls, and crawl spaces; installing high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; upgrading water heaters or boilers; and more.
?Helping the Department of Environment get the word out to San Franciscans about improving the energy efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of homes is a no brainer,? says Assessor-Recorder Ting. ?Simply put: when homeowners go green, they get green. Not only do homeowners save money right away on their energy bills, but they will see an increase in their home values.?
The program is designed to encourage SF residents to move fast in order to build momentum. To receive the full $7,000 in rebates, homeowners must apply no later than August 31st. In September the max incentive amount moves down to $6,000.
?Residential properties represent more than one-fifth of the City?s carbon footprint, so we need to do everything we can to encourage homeowners to save and conserve energy,? says Department of Environment Director Melanie Nutter. ?The Home Improvement and Performance program further demonstrates San Francisco?s commitment to conservation and will drive growth of green businesses and creation of more green jobs.?
