I would like to begin a teaching career in an independent/private school, preferable teaching middle or high school students. I have two bachelor?s degrees in the humanities. Would it be necessary (or extremely helpful) if I were to return to school and get my MA or MAT? Also, does anyone know of any career resources for those pursueing employment in independent/private schools? Thanks!

In fact, most independent/private schools will pay you LESS than public institutions, in which case, furthering your education (and possibly incurring more financial aid debt isn?t fiscally wise) I have researched this personally, as I am interested in the very same career. Sound Tracking: Harmonics Enable Bat to Focus on Prey Despite Noise

After an echolocating bat locks on to an insect with its sonar beam, it can keep track of its prey despite receiving a slew of echoes from other objects?leaves, vines and so on. How does it separate echoes bouncing off its target from echoes bouncing off the surrounding clutter, especially when the echoes reach the bat at the same time?

The key, according to a new study of echolocation in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), is that objects in a bat's sonar beam produce echoes of a different character depending on where they fall within the beam. The bat can focus on the echoes from the center of the beam, where their target lies, and discount those from clutter on the periphery. The study appears in the July 29 issue of Science.

The distinction is enabled by the fact that the bats' sonar pulses have two distinct components, or harmonics, at different frequency levels. The higher-frequency harmonic forms a narrower beam than the widespread low harmonic, so central targets receive and reflect both harmonics in roughly equal measure. Off-target objects, on the other hand, fall outside the narrower beam of the high harmonic and thus reflect proportionally more of the low-frequency sounds. The harmonic structure also assists in isolating insect targets from background reflections?higher-frequency sounds diminish more quickly in air, so the high harmonic returns to the bat more weakly when reflected off of distant objects.

The reflected mixture of the two harmonics allows the bat to focus on what it is targeting?the echoes that come back with both harmonics intact. "It's not something that they actively do, it's really something more to do with how their auditory system perceives different kinds of echoes," says lead study author Mary Bates, who recently received her PhD from Brown University and is now pursuing a career as a science writer. (Bates has contributed to Scientific American in the past.) "Echoes from farther away or off to the side are not going to be perceived as well and are not going to interfere as much with the target that's being tracked," she says.

Bates and her co-authors, James Simmons of Brown and Tengiz Zorikov of Georgian Technical University's Institute of Cybernetics in Tbilisi, used an experimental setup with a live bat at the foot of a Y-shaped platform. The bats were trained to respond to a target echo from one arm of the platform and to avoid a "clutter" echo from the other arm. Microphones near the bat and loudspeakers at the ends of the Y could be used to manipulate the echo, either by filtering out one or the other harmonic or by artificially delaying the echo of one harmonic relative to another.

By so doing, the researchers could isolate the importance of the harmonic structure in the bats' separation of target from clutter. "It's really looking at the shape of the sound that it emitted and the shape of the echo that it receives," Bates says.

The researchers also tested how harmonics play into a facet of the bats' signal-processing machinery known as amplitude-latency trading. Auditory neurons in the big brown bat that process echolocation signals respond more slowly to diminished echoes. "When an echo comes back at a lower amplitude, the delay of the neuron firing is increased," Bates says. In the case of a two-harmonic chirp, amplitude-latency trading comes into play when a single echo contains two harmonics with different amplitudes?for instance, when a clutter object returns an echo with a diminished high harmonic. The experiments indicate that amplitude-latency trading for such sounds hampers the bat's depth perception, effectively defocusing the bat's sonar image of the reflecting object. In other words, harmonics allow a bat to produce a focused sonar image of the target object and a defocused image of the surrounding clutter.

The effect is not unlike the difference between central and peripheral vision in humans. "This research suggests that the sonar image that the bat perceives is sharpest along the central axis and that objects on the periphery may be blurred," says Cynthia Moss, a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland, College Park, who studies echolocation in bats. She points to a recent paper in Nature Neuroscience that reports a similar effect for sound localization in owls, which helps the birds track their prey. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Owls can accurately track the source of sounds along their line of sight, but only at the expense of perception of sounds coming from the periphery, according to that study. "It may be a common perceptual strategy that operates across species and across modalities," Moss says.

San Francisco Promotes Financial Incentives for Eco-Friendly Home ...

The San Francisco Department of the Environment (SF Environment) is partnering with the city Assessor-Recorder's office and Energy Upgrade California to launch the SF Home Improvement & Performance (SFHIP) incentive program. The goal of the program is to increase the affordability of "green" home improvements for San Franciscans. San Francisco is one of the only cities in California that provides governmental incentives in addition to state and federal incentives for going solar.

The Assessor-Recorder will send information about the program and rebates via Notices of Assessed Value provided to every homeowner in San Francisco by their office. The hope is that the combination of affordability, environmental benefits AND property value increase will encourage many residents to invest in renewable resources. Qualifying projects including: adding insolution; air sealing windows, walls, and crawl spaces; installing high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; upgrading water heaters or boilers; and more.

?Helping the Department of Environment get the word out to San Franciscans about improving the energy efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of homes is a no brainer,? says Assessor-Recorder Ting. ?Simply put: when homeowners go green, they get green. Not only do homeowners save money right away on their energy bills, but they will see an increase in their home values.?

The program is designed to encourage SF residents to move fast in order to build momentum. To receive the full $7,000 in rebates, homeowners must apply no later than August 31st. In September the max incentive amount moves down to $6,000.

?Residential properties represent more than one-fifth of the City?s carbon footprint, so we need to do everything we can to encourage homeowners to save and conserve energy,? says Department of Environment Director Melanie Nutter. ?The Home Improvement and Performance program further demonstrates San Francisco?s commitment to conservation and will drive growth of green businesses and creation of more green jobs.?

Disturbed Announce 'Indefinite Hiatus'

After more than a decade together and some 13 million albums sold, Chicago heavy hitters Disturbed are preparing for an "indefinite hiatus," according to frontman David Draiman.

Draiman announced the news on his Twitter account, in response to a fan's question about rumors that the band was breaking up. And while he admitted that he has no idea what Disturbed's long-term plans are, their immediate future is pretty clear: "We haven't said that were breaking up. We simply do not know yet," Draiman wrote. "All I can say is we are going on an indefinite hiatus."

He added that he "can't really get into the reasons" why Disturbed were planning on taking a break, and wrote, simply, "Let's just say it's time." Draiman was equally mysterious about his future plans, writing that even if he wasn't singing with the band, he would "always be involved in music on some level."

Disturbed are currently touring North America with Godsmack and Megadeth on the 2011 Mayhem Festival, which wraps August 14 at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. They have a handful of South American dates scheduled for the end of the month, and then, as Draiman put it, the band is "done."

A spokesperson for the band could not be reached for comment by press time.

In an interview with Dallas radio station KEGL on Wednesday, Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan clarified Draiman's remarks, saying, "Ever since the start of this band, we've always had a game plan of what comes next after each thing. So it's always been 'write, record, tour, let's go home for a month, let's start writing again, do the same thing all over again.' ... This time around, we just haven't really gotten to those discussions yet. We know that we're coming to the end of this touring cycle and we just haven't planned on what we wanna do next."

And, much like his frontman, Donegan didn't seem to have an idea about just when (or if) Disturbed would ever play together again, but added that the focus right now is to end things on a high note.

"I don't have a clear answer [about the band's future], because I'm not sure where everybody's head's at at the moment other than we're having a great time out on tour, we're going out big, we're carrying big production, we wanna end this on a big note," he said. "I think we're not ready to sit down and have the discussions of when we wanna get back together or if we're gonna. So we're kind of winging it."

Disturbed formed in Chicago in the late 1990s and broke through to the mainstream with bludgeoning hits like "Stupify" and "Down With the Sickness." They have released five studio albums, the last four of which — 2002's Believe, '05's Ten Thousand Fists, '08's Indestructible and last year's Asylum — each debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart.

With "Captain America: The First Avenger" grossing over $65 million on its opening weekend and fans already buzzing about next year's "Avengers," Marvel's quickly expanding cinematic universe is as popular as ever. Now, from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 comes news that Marvel Studios might finally be moving ahead on a long-awaited release: Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man."

The "Shaun of the Dead" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" director has been talking about taking on Marvel's smallest superhero since at least 2007, promising a live-action film that would blend humor with action and would include two different Ant-Men: Henry Pym and Scott Lang.

In the Marvel Comics source material, both characters make use of a special formula and suit that allows them to shrink, as well as a high-tech helmet that facilitates communication with ants and other insects. "Ant-Man" is said to feature flashbacks of the original hero, Pym, as well as scenes of his successor, Lang, in the present day. While most recent superhero adaptations have focused on Marvel and DC's "big guns," characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and others, the protagonist of "Ant-Man" will be entirely new to all but the most fervent comic book fans. For Wright and Cornish, however, the freedom that comes with a lesser-known character is a large part of the upcoming project's appeal.

Wright was close-lipped on who he wanted to play the part of the movie's eponymous hero (or heroes), but he did hint that he had someone in mind.

China launches safety campaign after deadly train crash (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's rail minister, facing public outrage over Saturday's deadly train crash, has ordered a two-month safety review of railway operations and apologized for the accident which killed 39 people, state media reported on Tuesday.

Internet users have flooded websites and microblogs with comments following the crash in eastern China's Zhejiang province, the country's deadliest rail accident since 2008.

Even before the investigation into the cause of the crash was complete, Beijing on Sunday sacked three middle-level railway officials.

Efforts by the propaganda department to bar Chinese media from questioning official accounts of the accident only fueled the anger and suspicion.

Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily quoted Railways Minister Sheng Guangzu as saying a range of railway officials would be directed to work on front-line operations during the next two months and to learn from the accident.

He said the safety campaign will extend through the end of September and will focus on high-speed rail and passenger trains, such as implementing maintenance standards and reinforcing checks on power connections to pre-empt outages.

Special attention would also be paid to prevent accidents caused by flooding and inclement weather, the minister said.

Comments on China's popular Twitter-like microblogging site Weibo suggested the government will have to work very hard to subdue broad public anger at the crash.

In one online Weibo survey, 98 percent of more than 5,000 respondents answered "only devils could believe" the official death toll of 39.

"We've seen the kind-heartedness of the Chinese people (during this disaster) and the shameless avarice of those who govern us," wrote one person who goes by the name "well-behaved partition 57." "Those who lie to the great Chinese people should be made to pay the price."

The government has now begun paying compensation to the victims' families, with the first family accepting 500,000 yuan ($77,500), according to state news agency Xinhua.

Police also released for the first time the names of 28 of the dead along with their places of residence and identity card numbers, Xinhua said. The list included two foreigners -- an Italian and a U.S. citizen.

The Global Times, a widely read tabloid published by the People's Daily, wondered in an editorial why China was able to develop so fast economically yet ignore safety standards taken for granted in the West.

"As the world is experiencing globalization and integration, why can't China provide the same safety to its people?" it wrote.

But it also warned people not to jump to hasty conclusions.

"Criticism and punishment will certainly accelerate the process of becoming safer, yet blind and hasty finger-pointing should be avoided. China's development at this stage cannot be perfect."

The ministry is still investigating the cause of the accident. State media has said a bullet train hit another express that lost power following a lightning strike, adding that the power failure knocked out an electronic safety system designed to alert conductors about stalled locomotives on the line.

The accident has raised concerns about the safety of the country's high-profile and fast-growing rail network and threatens to undermine its plans to export high-speed train technology.

Separately, on Monday more than 20 trains were delayed for up to three hours due to a power outage on the flagship high-speed rail line between Beijing and Shanghai, the latest malfunction to plague the line since its grand opening in late June, local media reported on Tuesday.

The power cut happened after a storm in the central province of Anhui blew down an iron sheet, cutting off the power supply on Monday evening, the state-run Beijing News reported, citing an official from the Shanghai railway bureau.

When I asked for directions to the Creative Nonfiction or Literary Nonfiction aisle (I even referred to it as Narrative Nonfiction after the clerk eyed me with that quizzical ?what the heck are you talking about? look), she said, ?No, we don?t have one of those; give me the name of the author or the book title.?? The book(s) I sought were instead put in the very small Essays section. I rest my case.

2) Christians, who can often be substantially less well-read than the masses due to their narrow reading tastes, may have very little to no clue whatsoever about the strange little beast to which I refer, especially after noting the reaction I heard from that very well-read clerk.? I doubly rest my case.

But that?s all okay.? We can?t read it all and do it all, can we?? May I step in and give you a very brief primer on the Literary Nonfiction genre?? "We obviously want to pay attention to it," New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute, told SPACE.com. "But it's not going to reshape the basic concentration on Pluto and Charon, and also Nix and Hydra."

The newly discovered moon adds support to a theory that Pluto had a violent past. The system probably formed after a massive collision between two Pluto-size bodies about 4.6 billion years ago, Weaver said. The dwarf planet's satellites likely coalesced from the debris flung into space by this cosmic smash-up.

"The evidence is pointing toward that particular theory for the formation of the Pluto system," Weaver told SPACE.com.

More discoveries to come?

Scientists found P4 using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope during a search for possible rings around Pluto. (Hubble also detected Nix and Hydra back in 2005.) No rings have turned up, but that doesn't mean they don't exist, Weaver said.

The prospect of rings ? and perhaps more undiscovered satellites ? around Pluto is intriguing to mission planners. Yet it also induces a bit of anxiety, since the team wants New Horizons to emerge from its Pluto encounter without too much damage from fast-moving bits of dust and debris.

"This is motivating us to look even harder for more stuff in the Pluto system," Weaver said. "A lot of that is for safety reasons."

New Horizons was designed to unlock some of Pluto's long-held mysteries ? what it looks like, what it's made of and the nature of its atmosphere, for example. The discovery of P4 may be raising scientists' expectations of what the probe will deliver.

"It just heightens the probability that we'll find something that we hadn't expected," Weaver said.

Top GOP lawmakers press Obama on detention policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration lacks a coherent policy for handling terror suspects captured outside of Afghanistan, the Republican leaders of five House committees told President Barack Obama Tuesday.

The lawmakers signed a letter questioning why the administration decided to try a suspected Somali terrorist in a civilian court in New York rather than in a military commission setting at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The military captured Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame on April 19 and then put him aboard a Navy warship, where he was interrogated at sea by intelligence officials.

He was later transferred to New York where he was indicted earlier this month on federal charges.

"While the primary focus in the media on the Warsame case has been about forum selection for purposes of prosecution, our overarching concern is the lack of a comprehensive detention system to incapacitate and interrogate terrorists captured outside of Afghanistan," the lawmakers wrote.

Signing the letter were Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., Intelligence committee chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, and Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King, R-N.Y.

In the letter, the members cited recent congressional testimony from Vice Adm. William McRaven, who said decisions are made on a case by case on where to hold suspected terrorists captured by the U.S. military outside of Afghanistan and Iraq.

They wrote that the lack of a comprehensive military detention system will have detrimental results, including "the loss of critical detainee-provided intelligence and forcing the United States to be wholly dependent on foreign governments to hold and provide access to detainees."

Under interrogation, Warsame provided what U.S. officials said was important intelligence about al-Qaida in Yemen and its relationship with al-Shabab militants in Somalia. The two groups have been known to have ties, but the extent of that relationship has remained unclear.

The FBI later stepped in and began the interrogation from scratch, in a way that could be used in court. After the FBI read Warsame his Miranda rights, which include the right to remain silent and speak with an attorney, he kept talking for days.

Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, disputed the Republican claims in the letter.

"The policy is fairly clear as long as you understand that it's not a black and white situation or a math problem. We hold everybody we can and get the most information we can," Smith said in an interview. The decision is either a civilian trial or military tribunal, and Smith said the administration "in this case, made the right call."

The House-passed defense bill spending bill has language that would limit Obama's authority to transfer terrorist suspects from the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo to installations in the United States, even for trial. It also would make it difficult for the administration to move detainees to foreign countries.

Smith said that Congress needs to "take the handcuffs off" and allow the president to use all tools available in the war on terror.
