New cookbook makes studying for SAT piece of cake

Charis Freiman-Mendel spices up standardized test prep with recipes and fun facts in the innovative new book, "Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T."

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (MMD Newswire) September 12, 2011 - - For most students, scoring well on standardized testing is a daunting challenge with important consequences for their future. While many turn to tutors, study groups, guides and sample tests, Charis Freiman-Mendel turned to something she has loved forever: food. During middle school, Freiman-Mendel wrote the cookbook, "Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T." (ISBN 1461194490), to help master the verbal section of the SSAT, her high school entrance exam.

Over the course of 100 different recipes and fun fact blurbs, Freiman-Mendel highlights 1,000 vocabulary words that typically appear on standardized tests used for admission to high school, college and graduate school. Integrating her passion for cooking with her need to acquire vocabulary made studying and learning less of a chore and more of an enjoyable activity. Charis believes that the positive, creative and pressure-free study environment created by her book will help readers seamlessly build a comprehensive inventory of vocabulary that will help at every level of standardized testing, because the same words appear repeatedly on all of the tests.

Freiman-Mendel feels her cookbook and workbook suits anyone preparing for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, ISEE, COOP, GRE or TOEFL. All of the strategies for building vocabulary are incorporated in her book, including contextual reference, making associations and connections and engaging in word play. She experienced success firsthand and hopes to share her tried-and-true technique with others.

"I was able to satisfy my homeschool art requirement and my need to study for the SSAT by creating this book," Freiman-Mendel says. "Anything is better than memorizing lists of words. My book can work as part of a standard school curriculum or a really fun extracurricular activity."

Whichever standardized test the students are studying for, Freiman-Mendel believes they will be able to find their perfect portion of new vocabulary in "Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T." She hopes that her recipes and interesting facts will make standardized test studying as painless as possible.

"Cook Your Way Through the S.A.T." is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
