DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is executing a long-planned, methodical strategy to secure the Republican presidential nomination, while his chief opponent, Rick Perry, continues to firm his challenge to the experienced campaigner on the fly.
Neither is panicking nor retooling after an aggressive September. The Texas governor and Massachusetts former governor each landed blows to the other's perceived strengths, while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is said to consider entering the race.
Romney and Perry are preparing for a potentially long march to the nomination beginning with autumn ramp-ups in early-voting Iowa and New Hampshire.
Romney plans to dig deeper this fall into Iowa, where Perry has peeled support from other conservatives. Meanwhile Perry is meeting voters this weekend in New Hampshire, a must-win state for Romney.
LOS ANGELES?? Sony Pictures doesn't want to pay for 3-D glasses anymore, and is telling movie theaters that starting next May, they'll have to cough up the cash, TheWrap has confirmed.
With glasses costing studios at least 50 cents per admission, costs for 3-D eyewear can consume $5 million or more for a movie that grosses over $100 million.
The National Association of Theater Owners did not respond to comment.
However, this is not the first time a major studio has tried to move the cost burden of 3-D eyewear to exhibition.
In 2009, prior to the release of its third "Ice Age" film, Fox told theaters it wouldn't be paying for 3D glasses. Regal Cinemas ? the nation's largest chain ? killed the idea by telling Fox that rather than paying, it'd only run the 2-D version of the film.
Disney established the precedent for studios paying for 3D glasses, when ? in an effort to kickstart the digital-cinema market ? it agreed to float the eyewear for the 2005 release of "Chicken Little."
Sony has a pair of big 3-D films scheduled to be released next year: "Men in Black III" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" will be in theaters May 25 and July 3, respectively. The Beverly Hills-based RealD supplies the glasses, which it says cost less than 50 cents per pair.
It's also keeping out of the battle.
In a statement released to TheWrap, RealD said, "We understand there are discussions between studios and exhibitors about domestic 3-D glasses. There are multiple business models for 3-D glasses around the world and we are confident that domestic studios and exhibitors will work together to find an appropriate resolution for all parties. As a global company that works within multiple business models for 3-D glasses, RealD will support whatever decision is made between domestic exhibitors and studios."
Moviegoers pay a premium of around $3 for 3-D films. The money is split between theater owners and studios.
Theater owners, who have upgraded their screens to accommodate 3-D movies, don't want to pay the additional cost, and studios, which pay in the neighborhood of $18 million in additional costs to make movies in 3-D, don't want to incur it either.
And it's unlikely patrons will be willing to fork over more money for glasses in addition to higher-priced tickets.
Disney started the trend of paying for the glasses when 3-D movies became resurgent several years ago.
A spokesman for the National Association of Theatre Owners did not return a message seeking comment.

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's lenders are sending a team to Athens to inspect a government austerity plan they want implemented in exchange for aid, while Germany suggested a new bailout may have to be renegotiated.
Facing a wave of strikes and protests, Greece's Socialist government is accelerating its debt strategy to meet the terms of an International Monetary Fund and European Union rescue deal so it can receive a new loan next month and avoid bankruptcy.
The "troika" team of inspectors, which had threatened to cut off aid if Athens did not move faster, will begin talks on Thursday on a plan demanded by lenders to deepen budget cuts and raise taxes, which has set off protests not seen since June when riot police fought running battles with activists.
"I can confirm the Eurogroup (of euro zone ministers) will hold an additional meeting as soon as possible, still in October, to discuss the situation of Greece and consider the disbursement of the next tranche," a European Commission spokesman said in Brussels, announcing the troika's return.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested that parts of a planned new 109-billion-euro ($148.6 billion) rescue for the debt-laden country could be reopened, depending on the outcome of the troika's audit.
"We have to wait and see what the troika ... finds and what it will tell us (whether) we will have to renegotiate or not," she told Greek state television NET, without elaborating.
Several hundred activists affiliated with the Greek Communists converged on the finance ministry on Wednesday waving a banner saying "We won't pay!." They planned to burn bills for a new one-off income tax introduced this summer, while Athens and other parts of the country were hit by transport strikes.
If deemed adequate by the inspectors, the new austerity drive will secure an 8-billion-euro loan Greece needs to pay bills and salaries in October and bring it closer to starting a second bailout agreed in July.
As a condition of the visit and to resolve the row with the lenders, the Greek government had promised to send a written assurance outlining its new plan to meet its bailout targets. Its contents have not been made public.
Germany has repeatedly said negotiations about the details of the second rescue deal can begin only when the troika says Greece has qualified to receive the tranche expected in October, the sixth under a first bailout agreed in 2010.
At the same time, leaders from around the world have urged euro zone capitals to end a tortuous debate and create a safety net big enough to prevent Greece's problems from spreading to other euro members and triggering a fresh global downturn.
DEBT SWAP DEBATE DEEPENS
The second bailout aims to ease Greece's debt burden by imposing a 21 percent loss on private Greek bondholders.
After intensifying debate among economists and policymakers that only a 50 percent loss would make the country's debt viable, more investors have signed up to the bond exchange plan, Greek financial daily Naftemporiki reported.
Citing an unidentified finance ministry official, it said Greece's weeks-long struggle to lure private bondholders into the rescue plan had ended with it reaching the 90 percent participation target.
The finance ministry declined to comment on the report.
There is no agreement yet among euro zone governments on whether a renegotiation is needed, including more pain for Greece's bank creditors, or on a U.S.-sponsored plan to leverage the bloc's rescue fund to give it more firepower.
Germany's Bundestag (lower house) will vote on Thursday on widening the scope of the European Financial Stability Facility bailout fund, as agreed by the EU leaders on July 21.
Merkel faces a revolt within her conservative camp and may have to rely on support from the opposition Social Democrats and Greens to get the measure approved, damaging her authority.
STRIKES GRIP GREECE
Late on Tuesday, police dispersed about 1,000 anti-austerity protesters with tear gas in Athens' Syntagma Square, the epicenter of anti-austerity protests.
Taxi drivers, bus and tram operators staged strikes on Wednesday, causing long traffic jams leading into the ancient city center and forcing luggage-hauling tourists scrambling to find rides to the airport.
Other trades ranging from craftsmen, printers and tax officials also staged stoppages and activists planned marches on
parliament and the port of Piraeus later in the day.
"I've been trying to find a job for a year now and it's impossible," said Maria Kappa, a graduate of the School of Philosophy in Athens. "I don't see the rich people hurt by this austerity, it's always the poor who have to pay."
Lawmakers opened the way to the troika visit on Tuesday by passing a property tax bill. That piles the pressure on Greeks suffering from several waves of belt-tightening and deepens an economic downturn heading into its fourth year.
Prime Minister George Papandreou's 154 Socialist deputies forced the measure through in the 300-seat parliament.
In the accelerated strategy, the government will cut the 730,000 public workforce by a fifth, reduce the public wage bill by 20 percent, as well as lower overall pensions by 4 percent in addition to a 10 percent cut already agreed in previous plans.

He complained that the outside world did not understand the severity of the measures that Greece is taking by cutting pensions, salaries and public spending, but he insisted the country will ?make it? through the crisis.
?Greece is not the scapegoat of the euro area or the international economy,? said Venizelos.
Transport workers in Greece are extending their strikes ahead of the imminent visit of the IMF, EU and ECB troika.
The subway, tram and city trains pulled to a stop, causing more headaches for commuters who had endured a strike last week.
Newspaper headlines pondered the next move for Greece, speculating on possible ?haircuts? or even more austerity measures following meetings with the IMF, as the public said they have had enough.
At the same time police unions, protesting cutbacks in police departments and a wage reduction for officers as part of the austerity program, unfurled a large banner over Mount Lycabettus, a popular Athens landmark, reading: ?Pay day is a day of mourning?.
The week is expected to be riddled with strikes and protests after the recent austerity measures announced by the government, including further wage cuts, putting jobs at risk and further enraging unions.
But the?IMF and European negotiators will not be perturbed by the strikes in Greece,?as they?are frustrated at what they say is Greece?s slow reform pace.
After talks with IMF chief Christine Lagarde, Venizelos said that Athens will do ?whatever it takes? to reduce its huge deficit, which is currently about 160 per cent of the country?s gross domestic product.
This week will see EU and IMF officials return to Athens to examine the country?s progress on its deficit reduction plans.
Greece is still receiving money from an initial rescue, agreed in May last year, although it will not receive the next?round of funds?if inspectors rule that it is not keeping up with its spending cut targets.
Many analysts say this is a real possibility, which will mean Greece will not be able to meet its debt payment for October.

Shoppers in Southern California waited Saturday for word on whether major grocery stores would remain open, as a final wave of supermarket employees voted on a deal with grocers to stave off a strike.
It was the second day of voting on a deal that union leaders negotiated this week with the region's three largest grocery chains, Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons. They urged their rank-and-file to ratify the plan, which they said addressed concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during months of negotiations.
The supermarkets, meanwhile, said the agreement would allow them to remain competitive.
Polls were being kept open for two extra hours, until 8 p.m., so that members of United Food and Commercial Workers who want to vote would have the chance, union spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said. Union officials would be quick to tally votes, but it was not clear how long that would take, she said.
Details of the tentative agreement reached Monday were made available to members for the first time as they filed into their union locals' headquarters or other voting locations to cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday.
"I think they will be elated with the end result, and I believe they will vote in overwhelming numbers to ratify it," said Greg Conger, president of Local 324, one of the locals representing 62,000 grocery employees who have been working without a contract since March.
If ratified, the deal would end months of sometimes testy discussions between union officials and representatives of The Vons Cos.; Ralphs Grocery Co., a subsidiary of The Kroger Co.; and Albertsons, which is owned by Supervalu Inc.
Ralphs had indicated it would initially close all 250 of its stores if there had been a strike; Albertsons had said it could shutter up to 100 locations, while Vons had said its stores would remain open.
The prospect of shuttered stores and tense picket lines prompted fears of a repeat of the four-month strike eight years ago that cost the industry $2 billion and created a mess for shoppers.
This time around, with unemployment at 12.1 percent in California, workers evidently feared that they would find little public sympathy if they voluntarily walked off the job.
The market chains, meanwhile, were likely reluctant to invite shutdowns and picket lines that might alienate shoppers already spending less due to the economic downturn.
Union leaders and the markets announced in July that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but remained far apart on payments to the union health care trust fund.
Union members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize their leaders to call a strike. Those leaders said they were responding to what they characterized as the chains' delaying tactics when they issued the required 72-hour notice Thursday evening to cancel the contract extension under which they had been working since March.
But after the Sunday evening deadline came and went with neither a strike nor a deal, store employees returned to work. Union officials announced late Monday morning that the tentative deal had been reached.
