Russian, Chinese fund set up

BEIJING -- Russia's Sistema Mass-media and Chinese technology company Huawei have set up a Russian-Chinese film fund. The fund, which was launched at the Cannes Film Festival, aims to encourage better coordination of co-production and distribution, as well as fostering cultural links between the two countries. The fund will establish grants to help filmmakers, both emerging and established. Among co-productions already under way are "The Squadron," a story of Soviet and Chinese pilots, and biopics of Chairman Mao Zedong and former leader Deng Xiaoping. A large-scale production following the lives of Chinese intelligentsia in Russia in the early 20th century is about to be launched, Huawei said in a statement. The fund's board of trustees will include reps from the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Federal Fund for Social and Economic Support for Russian Cinema. The fund's expert committee will include reps from China Film Group, China International Television Corporation, Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group, Russian World Studios and WeiT Media. "We need cultural exchange in order to understand each other better and it is media content that encourages cross-cultural interaction in the information society," said Sistema Mass-media prexy Andrei Smirnov.
