Occupy Wall Street: Many Cities Leaving Protesters Alone [LATEST UPDATES]

By ERIKA NIEDOWSKI and MEGHAN BARR, The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- While more U.S. cities are resorting to force to break up the Wall Street protests, many others - Philadelphia, New York, Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., among them - are content to let the demonstrations go on for now.

(CLICK HERE OR SCROLL DOWN FOR LATEST UPDATES)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, for example, said Friday that the several hundred protesters sleeping in Zuccotti Park, the unofficial headquarters of the movement that began in mid-September, can stay as long as they obey the law.

"I can't talk about other cities," he said. "Our responsibilities are protect your rights and your safety. And I think we're trying to do that. We're trying to act responsibly and safely."

Still, the city made life a lot harder for the demonstrators: Fire authorities seized a dozen cans of gasoline and six generators that powered lights, cooking equipment and computers, saying they were safety hazards.

In the span of three days this week, police broke up protest encampments in Oakland, Calif., Atlanta and, early Friday, San Diego and Nashville, Tenn.

Nashville police cracked down after authorities imposed a curfew on the protest. Twenty-nine people were arrested and later released after a judge said the demonstrators were not given enough time to comply with the brand-new rule. They received citations for trespassing instead.

Fifty-one people were arrested in San Diego, where authorities descended on a three-week-old encampment at the Civic Center Plaza and Children's Park and removed tents, canopies, tables and other furniture.

Officials there cited numerous complaints about human and animal feces, urination, drug use and littering, as well as damage to city property - the same problems reported in many other cities. Police said the San Diego demonstrators can return without their tents and other belongings after the park is cleaned up.

Earlier this week, in the most serious clashes of the movement so far, more than 100 people were arrested and a 24-year-old Iraq War veteran suffered a skull fracture after Oakland police armed with tear gas and bean bag rounds broke up a 15-day encampment and repulsed an effort by demonstrators to retake the site.

But other cities have rejected aggressive tactics, at least so far, some of them because they want to avoid the violence seen in Oakland or, as some have speculated, because they are expecting the protests to wither anyway with the onset of cold weather.

Officials are watching the encampments for health and safety problems but say that protesters exercising their rights to free speech and assembly will be allowed to stay as long as they are peaceful and law-abiding.

"We're accommodating a free speech event as part of normal business and we're going to continue to enforce city rules," said Aaron Pickus, a spokesman for the mayor of Seattle, where about 40 protesters are camping at City Hall. "They have the right to peacefully assemble. Ultimately what the mayor is doing is strike a balance."

Authorities have similarly taken a largely hands-off approach in Portland, Ore., where about 300 demonstrators are occupying two parks downtown; Memphis, Tenn., where the number of protesters near City Hall has ranged from about a dozen to about 100; and in Salt Lake City, where activists actually held a vigil outside police headquarters this week to thank the department for not using force against them.

In the nation's capital, U.S. Park Police distributed fliers this week at two encampments totaling more than 150 tents near the White House. And while the fliers listed the park service regulations that protesters were violating, including a ban on camping, a park police spokesman said the notices should not be considered warnings.

In Providence, R.I., Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said the protesters will not be forcibly removed even after the Sunday afternoon deadline he set for them. He said he intends to seek their ouster by way of court action, something that could take several weeks.

"When you see police having to quell disturbances with tear gas or other means, it's not what the police want and it's not what we want to see in our society," Pare said.

Similarly, in London, church and local government authorities are going to court to evict protesters camped outside St. Paul's Cathedral - though officials acknowledged Friday it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

Several hundred protesters against economic inequality and corporate excesses have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15. On Oct. 21 cathedral officials shut the building, saying the campsite represented a health and safety hazard.

It was the first time the 300-year-old church, one of London's best-known buildings, had closed since German planes bombed the city during World War II.

In Minneapolis, where dozens have been sleeping overnight on a government plaza between a county building and City Hall, the three-week-old occupation has been far tamer than those in other cities, with only a few arrests.

Sheriff Rich Stanek has made it a practice to meet with protesters daily to talk about their issues and the day ahead, and he has refused to engage what he called "the 1 percent" who want to cause trouble.

"We decided that's not the tactic we want to take. Doing that sometimes requires biting your tongue," he said. He added: "Some people have said that's `Minnesota nice.' It's a balance."

Rage Against The Machine -- Southern Style

From Lexington, SC Patch:

While images of unrest and violence among anti-riot police and protesters in Oakland, Calif., and arrests in Atlanta have grabbed headlines this week, the scene surrounding Occupy Columbia is downright bucolic in comparison.

Granted, Columbia is hardly a hotbed of radicalism, either on the right or the left. And it could hardly be confused with Oakland, Atlanta, or any number of other cities nationwide that are holding similar -- and much larger -- occupations to protest the corporatism that protesters allege has stripped political and economic power from average citizens.

Still, it might be cities such as Columbia that prove illustrative of how to handle and sustain a form of protest not seen since the Great Depression, when legions of unemployed men, the homeless and veterans erected tent cities and shanty towns known as "Hoovervilles."

Many protesters tell Patch they have managed to create what is, for the most part, a respectful and cooperative relationship with local law enforcement, not to mention the city, residents, and the authorities who oversee the State House grounds, where Occupy Columbia holds court.

"The cops have been nothing but kind," noted a protester who only gave his name as "Brandon," who along with a couple of other protesters spoke with Lexington Patch late one night and into the wee hours of the morning earlier this week as their fellow protesters slept around them.

Occupy Minnesota: Staying Put

While other Occupy groups fend off mass arrests and mayors wielding arcane permit rules, Occupy Minnesota has taken root without fuss from the fuzz. The Star Tribune reports:

Despite violent confrontations between police and protesters in Oakland, Calf. and Nashville this week, things remain placid on "People's Plaza" outside Hennepin County Government Center. It?s been three weeks since Occupy Minnesota began, and though numbers on many days are small, there is no indication they are about to depart anytime soon.

"We are planning to continue as long as we possibly can, indefinitely, no matter how cold it is going to get," said Osha Karow, one of the original organizers of the occupation.

Local authorities do not appear to be anxious to imitate some other cities where the protesters have been unceremoniously driven off public property, with police confrontations that have created unfavorable publicity for local governments.

'Then They Fight You'

From Truthout:

The national standoff between authorities and protesters in the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement has reached a new and dangerous level of tension and violence.

At first glance, it looked like something out of Pink Floyd's film 'The Wall': menacing images of creatures in gas masks swarming toward the camera under a dark and forbidding sky. This was no dystopian fantasy, however; these were members of the Oakland police department charging into a group of protesters behind a wall of tear gas, flash-bang bombs, rubber bullets and bean-bag projectiles. The police bull-rushed these unarmed protesters with the intention to do violence, and violence is exactly what they did.

As of this writing, one woman is known to have been seriously injured when a flash-bang grenade went off right by her head. She was seen being carried away unconscious from the scene of the police riot by other protesters. Anther known injured protester has a name, and a face, and a record of service to his country. Scott Olsen, a Marine veteran of two Iraq tours, was participating in the Occupy Oakland protest when he was shot in the head by a ?less-than-lethal? police projectile, suffered a fractured skull, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His condition has since been upgraded to fair.

Michael Moore Visits Occupy Oakland

HuffPost's Robin Wilkey reports:

Famed activist and documentarian Michael Moore visited Occupy Oakland to speak to the crowd today. He laughed and joked with the crowd, but the tone turned somber when he called for 30 seconds of silence for Scott Olsen. "We are all Scott Olsen," he said.

"This movement has killed apathy. They've turned off Dancing with the Stars!" He continued. "Something good will come out of this movement. And this weekend in Oakland will stand out as a watershed moment."

Before he left the podium, Moore thanked the crowd. "Millions are inspired by you because you didn't go away. The next night, you came back."

College Grads Air Frustrations At Zuccotti Park

HuffPost's Amanda Fairbank reports:

Since graduating from Ithaca College in May, Nathan Grant has searched high and low for steady work.

After spending the summer renting kayaks at a local campground, Grant moved back in with his parents in Little Egg Harbor, N.J.

In mid-September, Grant first read about Occupy Wall Street online. He said he felt a deep connection to the movement early on, motivated to join it not only because of his struggle to find a job, but also because of the $90,000 in student loan debt that now hangs like an albatross around his neck.

A little over a week ago, Grant, 22, moved into lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. He has yet to return home.

Midwest Occupy Wall Street Protesters Seek To Highlight Foreclosure Mess
As the Occupy Wall Street movement enters its seventh week of protest against income inequality, some Midwestern Occupiers are zeroing in on housing issues affecting their communities.

Occupy Minneapolis successfully pressured U.S. Bank this week to postpone a Twin Cities woman's eviction. Now they're planning "Operation F," a campaign pushing for a foreclosure moratorium by occupying foreclosed homes.

"What we started to do was to make preparations, digging in and taking the occupations to peoples' homes," said Ben Egerman, a protester at Occupy Minneapolis. The protesters will go to houses where the homeowners face eviction and 'occupy' the homes to highlight the ongoing mortgage mess.

And in Iowa, Occupy activists met Thursday with state Attorney General Tom Miller, who is leading a nationwide investigation of bad faith foreclosure dealings by big banks, to voice their concerns.

Homeowner advocates fear the attorneys general will reach a settlement that is not tough enough on banks, despite the potential for it being the largest multi-state settlement since the agreement with tobacco companies in 1998. "I'm still not sure if the settlement committee is going to require the banks pay anywhere near as much as they should, but that's a hard number to get your arm around," Ed Fallon said after he left the meeting with Miller and his staff.

Occupy Movement In Santa Barbara

Michael Clear sent OfftheBus this report from Santa Barbara, California on Oct. 28, 2011.

The largest rally was two weeks ago with nearly 500 attending. Each weekend there is a meeting in De La Guerra Plaza followed by a march down State Street, the town?s main thoroughfare. The march is monitored by city police on bicycles, motor cycles, and cars. The police have apparently been instructed to re-direct traffic on this busy street to accommodate the marchers. We chant ?We are the 99%; Banks got bailed out, we got left out; often to thumbs up and other gestures of support from on-lookers and passersby on the busy shopping sidewalks.

The marchers routinely stop in front of the Bank of America and Chase Bank and chant for a few minutes. The banks lock their doors for this and last week there was a heavy police presence in front of both banks. On a few occasions demonstrators have attempted to enter the banks to close their accounts accompanied by the chant ?Close your accounts? by the marchers; no demonstrator has been able to enter any bank due to locked doors despite the march being held during open banking hours.

This week, the Occupy encampment at De La Guerra plaza was raided in the early morning by police, and the campers were ejected from the park. There is a substantial police presence each day at the park to ensure that there is no further camping.

We have been fortunate to avoid direct confrontation with the police for the most part, though I suspect that it would not take a great deal to ignite a more aggressive confrontation either by police or by protestors.

Oakland Mayor Booed During Occupy Vigil

HuffPost's Robin Wilkey reports

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, who has been aggressively trying to regain the city's trust since the incident on Tuesday, was also scheduled to speak, but, according to a statement from Quan, her 6 p.m. address was cancelled. "I had hoped to speak directly to you tonight," she wrote. "I was told that I could speak at the Speak Out at 6 p.m., but that was cancelled. So I apologize for providing these remarks in written form." She continued, explaining the she was "deeply saddened" by the incident. "When there's violence, there are no winners -- it polarizes us and opens old wounds rather than brings us together, which is the aim of Occupy Wall Street and uniting the 99 percent."

Later, Quan visited the plaza, but was booed upon arrival, and was mobbed by protesters chanting "go home," calling her a killer and screaming for her to step down. KTVU captured raw footage the protesters mobbing her as she arrived.

How To Get Laid By The 99 Percent: A Manifesto

Well, perhaps those services can be rendered, also thanks to Craigslist. "...[T]here was much discussion of the removal of the dc flag upon return to McPherson square and many occupiers shared this concern. Expect a dc voting rights and equality march to take place soon and we hope that these folks who have expressed this grievance will join us. Occupy Nashville Issues Press Release On Arrests

Organizers compile a timeline of events. And conclude:

Occupy Nashville supporters believe that these arbitrary rule changes are intended to stifle political speech and are in direct violation of their 1st amendment rights, and rights also affirmed under the Tennessee State Constitution.

Says Occupy Nashville supporter Buck Gorrell:

?We have a legitimate complaint that is supported by a majority of the American people that there is too much corruption in government. We have a right to assemble to address those complaints. What more appropriate public space is there in Tennessee for that purpose than Legislative Plaza? The state government is imposing arbitrary barriers to our rights under the Constitution.?

According to legal council for Occupy Nashville, the imposition of fees or costs in order to assemble in a public place for the purpose of political speech is a clear violation of Constitutional rights.

Says Occupier Tristan Call:

?We are not camping here for fun. We are not just here to be here. We are doing exactly what is described in the 1st Amendment: peacefully assembling to petition the government.?

Demonstrators Occupy Brazil Dam

Hundreds of activists angry over dam's impact. According to one news account:

More than 400 activists occupied the site of Brazil's $11bn Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, demanding that construction be halted on the controversial project in the heart of the Amazon.

"Everything was peaceful - there were no guards or workers," said a spokesperson for the Indigenous Missionary Council, a group linked to the Catholic Church.

The indigenous people and environmentalists at the site of what would be the third biggest dam in the world - after China's Three Gorges dam and the Itaipu dam on the border of Brazil and Paraguay - say they will stay indefinitely.

They are demanding a total halt to work on the project in western Para state, or at least a suspension of construction until local residents can be consulted, the representative said.

Times Reports On Lack Of Diversity At Zuccotti Park

The New York Times' Alice Speri reports:

Two weeks into Occupy Wall Street?s takeover of Zuccotti Park, a group of Bronx community organizers and friends rode the subway down to Lower Manhattan to check out a movement they supported in principle.

When they got there, they recalled, they found what they had suspected: a largely white and middle-class crowd that claimed to represent ?the 99 percent? but bore little resemblance to most of the people in the group?s own community. That community, the South Bronx, is one of the poorest areas of the country and home almost exclusively to blacks and Hispanics.

The Guardian: The Occupy Movement Has Staying Power

Despite the flurry of Occupy arrests, which now number in the thousands, The Guardian suggests that the movement has roots:

So what can give the Occupiers deep roots to weather the storms coming their way and make this vital movement sustainable? For one, the Occupy movements are setting the agenda: rather than being reactive at summits where the powerful determine the terrain, they are occupying in their own neighbourhoods at times of their choosing. And they are staying. With the encampments comes a higher level of public engagement that encourages people to look beyond lazy cliches of protesters, creating what has the potential to be a truly democratic, plural, open space.

Occupy Wall Street: Protests Spread to Islamabad, If Only For A Day

HuffPost's Joshua Hersh reports:

According to CNN, some 75 people gathered in front of the local headquarters of the World Bank on Wednesday, chanting anti-capitalist and pro-labor slogans like "Should we eat dust or stones?" or "Where should we go? What should we eat? Inflation has reached its peak."

A pamphlet handed out by the group more closely echoed the rhetoric of Occupy protesters in the United States, where the movement has spread to dozens of cities, saying, "We are the 99%. We will drive out the international 1%."

PFT: NFL reviewing Dielman concussion

Kris DielmanAP

During both Friday afternoon?s PFT Live and Friday night?s NBC SportsTalk on VERSUS (at the tail end of our show-starting ?10 things to know? for the coming weekend of NFL action), I devoted some time to the circumstances surrounding the concussion sustained last Sunday by Chargers guard Kris Dielman.? Far more troubling than the fact that Dielman suffered a seizure on the flight home from New York after a loss to the Jets is the fact that Dielman exhibited enough signs of wooziness and disorientation to mandate an immediate evaluation.

For those of you who have the game stored on a DVR or access to NFL.com?s Game Rewind service, fast forward to 12:30 of the fourth quarter.? On that play, Dielman pulls from his left guard position toward the right side of the line, dropping his head to block Jets linebacker Calvin Pace.? Dielman then reels away from the block, takes several steps, and lands on the ground.? He stumbles to his feet, and Jim Nantz of CBS points out that Dielman is ?a little shaky and wobbly.?

Umpire Tony Michalek pauses to look at Dielman as he tries to get up.? Michalek puts his whistle in his mouth, apparently considering whether to call an injury timeout.? But then Michalek, possibly after hearing Dielman say that he?s OK, focuses on the task of spotting the ball for the next play.

Dielman waves toward the sideline, and he seems to regain his wits.? So he stays in the game, even though in hindsight he definitely should have been removed.

?We are reviewing it with the club, its medical staff and the NFLPA,? NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT via email on Friday regarding the situation. ?The player was not diagnosed with a concussion until after the game.?

The point, of course, is that he wasn?t diagnosed with a concussion until after the game because he wasn?t checked for a concussion until after the game.? And if the league?s much-publicized (but in some cases possibly ignored) ?WHEN IN DOUBT, LEAVE THEM OUT? memo from last month means what it says, players must be removed from play whenever there is ?any suspicion? that the player has suffered a concussion.

?Guys get bounced around pretty good,? coach Norv Turner said Friday, per the Associated Press.? ?It?s tough to see everybody from the sideline, or even from upstairs or a TV screen what a guy?s condition is.? Our guys understand that if they aren?t able to go, they need to get out.? I think it was handled the way we?d try to understand any injury situation.?

Turner, with all due respect, is wrong.? And here?s why.? The CBS cameras showed that Dielman was wobbling and disoriented, even though he successfully pulled himself together, as players who don?t want to exit games often do.? That should have been enough reason to remove him from the field and evaluate him.

But there?s no system for making that happen, even though there should be.? The league, if truly serious about the problem of concussions, must have a safety official in the replay booth, scanning the field, the sidelines, the replays, and all other available evidence for signs that any player may have suffered a head injury.? The safety official should then buzz down to an independent neurologist, who will remove the player from action and keep him out until the player is cleared.

We invite the NFL or anyone else to advance a persuasive argument against this approach.? We have a feeling that we?ll be waiting for a while.

"Prime Suspect" hits ratings low, "Big Bang" still tops (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? With numbers from Game 6 of the World Series on Fox still pending, "The Big Bang Theory" holds the top ratings spot of Thursday night. NBC's comedy block suffered a series of losses, and "Prime Suspect" hit a series low, according to preliminary numbers.

"Big Bang" at 8 slid 12 percent from last week, but still towered over the competition, scoring a 4.5 rating/13 share in the adults 18-49 demographic and 14.2 million total viewers.

"Rules of Engagement" followed at 8:30, taking a 3.4/9 and 10.7 million total viewers, while "Person of Interest" at 9 was down 4 percent for a 2.6/6 and 11.5 million total viewers.

"The Mentalist" closed the night at 10, performing flat with last week with a 2.5/6 and 12.2 million total viewers. The combined performances gave CBS an average 3.0/8, which barring World Series results is currently the best performance for a network Thursday night, and an average 12 million total viewers -- also the highest ranking for the night as things now stand.

NBC's outlook was not nearly so rosy, with the network taking double-digit hits pretty much across the board. "Community" at 8 took an 18 percent hit from two weeks ago (the network ran repeats last Thursday) to tie for its series low with a 1.4/4 and 3.4 million total viewers, while "Parks and Recreation" at 8:30 also tied for a series low, dropping 14 percent to a 1.8/5 and 3.8 million total viewers.

"The Office" at 9, meanwhile, hit its lowest numbers ever, slipping 15 percent to a 2.8/7 and 5.4 million total viewers. "Whitney" at 9:30 was the network's sole bright spot , climbing 5 percent for a 2.1/5 and 4.2 million total viewers. "Prime Suspect" closed the night at 10 with a series low, dropping 8 percent for a 1.2/3 and 4 million total viewers.

At ABC, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" kicked off the night at 8, receiving a 5 percent boost over last year's telecast with a 2.3/6 and 7.3 million total viewers. "Grey's Anatomy" at 9 and "Private Practice" at 10 also posted modest gains, with the former scoring a 3.7/9 and 9.8 million total viewers, and the latter taking a 2.4/6 and 6.5 million total viewers.

Egypt military detains activist over clashes: lawyer (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian military prosecutors ordered an activist be detained on Sunday for 15 days and another bailed pending investigations into accusations they incited violence, a move rights groups say is part of a crackdown by the ruling army on dissent.

A lawyer for Alaa Abd El Fattah, a high-profile blogger, said he was detained after appearing with activist Bahaa Saber before military authorities on Sunday over "inciting violence and sabotage" in connection with deadly clashes between the army and protesters in Cairo on October 9.

Saber was released on bail, said the lawyer, who said he would appeal Abd El Fattah's detention despite facing little chance of winning a case against the military prosecutor.

Abd El Fattah's sister told Reuters he was detained after both activists had refused to answer the army prosecutor's questions. She said they rejected the "legitimacy of the military prosecutor" and would only speak to a civilian official.

Egyptian military sources were not immediately available to comment on the case.

Some 25 people were killed in clashes that erupted during a demonstration by Christians over what they said was an attack on a church in southern Egypt.

Protesters said military police used excessive force, firing live ammunition and driving army vehicles into the crowds. The army defended their actions during the protest and blamed "foreign elements" and other agitators for the violence.

"They committed a massacre, a horrible crime and now they are working on framing someone else for it," Abd El Fattah earlier told Reuters on his way to the military prosecutor's office. "This whole situation is distorted."

"Instead of launching a proper investigation, they are sending activists to trial for saying the plain truth and that is that the army committed a crime in cold blood," he said, adding the military was using the "incitement" card to shift the blame away from its own officers.

MILITARY TRIALS

Authorities have detained 28 others on suspicion of attacking soldiers. Any trial will be before a military court, a move that has drawn broad criticism from politicians who want the army to use civilian courts and say the military cannot be the arbitrator when it is accused of having a role.

London-based rights group Amnesty said Saber could be charged with "verbal incitement" and said alleged videos showing Abd El Fattah throwing rocks during the protests could be used against them.

If charged, the two are also likely to face military trials, the rights group and others said.

Abd El Fattah, a well-known blogger and political activist, was previously arrested in 2006 when ousted President Hosni Mubarak was still office. Critics say the army has been using similar tactics against dissenters as Mubarak did.

Sunday's detention order was met by condemnation from activists who said the army was attacking "symbols of the revolution."

"The regime that arrested Alaa in 2006 is the same regime that is arresting him 2011, it has not yet fallen," Muhamed El-Hajj wrote on Twitter, reviving a 'Free Alaa' campaign that was used in 2006 to free the blogger.

Rights groups say over 12,000 civilians have been brought before military courts since the uprising that toppled Mubarak in February, calling into question the willingness of the army council to transform Egypt into a democracy.

"The military justice system should never be used to investigate or prosecute civilians. Military courts are fundamentally unfair, as they deprive defendants of basic fair trial guarantees," Amnesty said in a statement.

"The fact that military prosecutors are responsible for investigating the violence -- for which members of the armed forces are believed to be largely responsible -- has raised serious questions over the inquiry's independence."

In the late 1990s, Beavis and Butt-Head became the ultimate critics of music videos, dissecting MTV's signature programming with surgical comedic precision.

Fast forward 14 years and the animated, dumbass duo is back, and ironically turning its attention to the hit show whose time slot they're currently occupying.

MTV, of course, no longer airs music videos, making the network's own name a huge misnomer. But they do air a bunch of absurd, yet popular reality shows.

Jersey Shore chief among them.

Zing. As for the "plots" that fill the time when the morons aren't glued to the TV, B-squared aspired to be bitten by a werewolf to help them score chicks.

Obviously. After they mistook a disease-ridden homeless guy for a werewolf, all they scored was Hep-C, not ladies. Beavis cried a lot. Butt-Head teased him relentlessly.

While still the same show - in which Beavis and Butt-Head's insecurity causes them to hate on the world, and often each other - some things have changed.

Self-awareness, for one. Unlike back in the day, there's a self-deprecation, a sense of clarity shared between Beav and Butt and the world surrounding them.

They know they're slacker morons with dumb schemes, essentially.

Watching the boys shred pop culture as we know it may not be a new thing, but when done with a sense of irony, it's certainly a new spin on the '90s classic.

Rick Perry Urges New Hampshire To Repeal Gay Marriage Law, Defund Planned Parenthood

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, campaigning in New Hampshire Friday, praised legislators in the state for working to repeal the state's same-sex marriage law.

"As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage," Perry said at the annual banquet for Cornerstone Action, a conservative advocacy group. "And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father."

In June 2009, New Hampshire became the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. On Top Magazine reported that a bill to repeal New Hampshire's gay marriage law passed a House committee this week.

In his speech on Friday, Perry also praised efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.

"Unfortunately this current administration has since provided one million dollars in federal grant money to Planned Parenthood in direct conflict with this state's policies. And the bottom-line is this: If you want to stop Washington's many violations of the 10th Amendment ... then we must make President Obama a one-term president," Perry said.

In June, New Hampshire's Executive Council voted 3-2 to end the the state's $1.8 million contract with Planned Parenthood. The Obama administration restored the funding in September.

In August, Perry signed a pledge to support a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

A New York man pleaded guilty Thursday to what experts said was the first ever proven case of black-market organ trafficking in the United States.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Levy Izhak Rosenbaum admitted in federal court in Trenton that he had brokered three illegal kidney transplants for New Jersey-based customers in exchange for payments of $120,000 or more. "I'm doing this a long time."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">At a 2008 meeting with the undercover agent, Rosenbaum claimed he had an associate who worked for an insurance company in Brooklyn who could take the recipient's blood samples, store them on dry ice and send them to Israel, where they would be tested to see if they matched the prospective donor, authorities said. Donors would then be brought from Israel and undergo surgery to remove the kidney in a U.S. hospital, according to court documents.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Although the hospitals where the operations Rosenbaum arranged have not been named, critics and experts on organ trafficking say many U.S. hospitals do not have vigorous enough procedures for looking into the source of the organs they transplant because such operations are lucrative.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Despite guidelines from various groups and Medicare, U.S. transplant centers are mostly free to write their own rules for screening donors to make sure they are not selling their organs. The questions they ask vary widely. Some hospitals require long waiting periods to weed out shady donors; others don't.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Under 1984 federal law, it is illegal for anyone to knowingly buy or sell organs for transplant. The practice is illegal just about everywhere else in the world, too.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">But demand for kidneys far outstrips the supply, with 4,540 people dying in the U.S. last year while waiting for a kidney, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. And I?m not even Canadian.</p><p>As a youth witnessing WWE?s attitudinal evolution in 1997, I thought I was the only American left who still wanted to see The ?Hit Man? not just prevail but also thoroughly pummel Shawn Michaels? face at Survivor Series in Montreal. Roughly 14 years and a full screening of ?Shawn vs. Bret: WWE?s Greatest Rivalries? later, I still look at the sports-entertainment world through electric pink tinted sunglasses.</p><p>Of course, like everyone else in the late 1990s, I found entertainment in HBK and D-Generation X?s irreverent treatment of Sgt. Slaughter, their oversized deli meat gag and the rest of their uncouth rebellious acts. I even (shamefully) acquired a liking for the DX entrance music.</p><p>Despite all this, I was with Bret. To me, he was a pink and black beacon of virtue. He reinforced the values of ?right versus wrong? with a functioning moral compass and I agreed with his crusade. I simply couldn?t fathom how anyone watching Monday Night Raw could?ve ignored the fact that Hart was, for lack of a better term, shafted at every turn while Michaels ? lawless and smug ? gained the support of millions. It was as if the entire world had suddenly turned on the guy who?d proudly championed them for so many years all because it became cool to crotch-chop.</p><p><img alt="" class="left" src="http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2011/10/hbkharytdiaryBretmeet.jpg" />I?ve had the rare and incredible opportunity to shadow both ring legends in 2010 and 2011 in WWE.com?s WrestleMania Diary. Firsthand, I?ve witnessed Hart and HBK interact as men who?ve moved past their much chronicled dispute, now more than a decade after the most personal ring rivalry culminated in sports-entertainment?s most infamous betrayal: the ?Montreal Screwjob.? (WATCH)</p><p>But as the blemish of one cold night up north begins to at least fade in comparison to two laudable careers, looking back, I?m still a staunch Hit Man supporter ? especially at Survivor Series ?97 ? for a few good reasons.</p> <p><strong>Alternative paths could?ve been taken</strong><br />With The Excellence of Execution bound south for WCW, WWE?s Chairman was faced with the dilemma of needing an individual to take the WWE Title off the departing Hit Man. As he cites in the ?Greatest Rivalries? DVD, Hart was open and amenable to alternative options or other successors who weren?t named Shawn Michaels.</p> <p>There was a litany of routes to take with a countless different outcomes, several of which, according to Bret, were considered yet abandoned at Survivor Series in lieu of the controversial climax. It could?ve been Hart against ?Stone Cold? in a rematch from the previous year?s Survivor Series. Maybe Bret?s final match took place the next night on Raw. Frankly, it could?ve been any<em>one</em> but Michaels, any<em>where</em> but on pay-per-view, any <em>place</em> but Canada. Alter any of these factors and it?s likely the Montreal incident would never have happened, thus leaving the legacies of Hart and HBK untarnished.</p> <p><strong><img alt="" class="right" src="http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2011/10/hbkrefhart268.jpg" />It was a matter of respect</strong><br />At the time, the source of Bret?s frustration in WWE happened to be the same individual with whom Hart shared heated contention for the company?s mountaintop. There was something innately wrong, something amiss with Shawn Michaels? behavior and Bret recognized it. That something was rooted in respect ? or a lack of it.</p><p>As he admits today, The Showstopper knowingly pressed the limits of Hart?s signature composure and arrogantly dismissed the few olive branches extended by his adversary. It was as if while gleefully accepting his rise and laud in WWE, Michaels wouldn?t reciprocate even the minimum display of professional respect. This truth behind the curtain and the fiery rivalry on worldwide television made it understandably impossible for Bret to swallow, departure or not. Hart?s resistance was on principle.</p><p>A Superstar?s core concern is to entertain, sure. It just happened that Bret Hart recognized his role as a globally respected figure. The Hit Man who performed in the ring was the same real life person with the same strong convictions. In this case, doing what was right was not letting Michaels just skate on by.</p><p><strong>Championing the locker room</strong><br />The WWE Championship is a symbolic key to the WWE kingdom, including all those who perform in it. Bret?s refusal to simply allow HBK to take the WWE Title in Hart?s final WWE match was in defense of not just himself but also a full locker room of Superstars.</p><p><img alt="1190616402001|03:30" class="videoimage left" src="http://vids.wwe.com/assets/thumbs/13442_268x179.jpg" title="Triple H defies the wishes of WWE management during the infamous Curtain Call in 1996" />Michaels? ascent was historically at the expense of other competitors, even his own best friend, Triple H. Following the infamous ?Curtain Call,? The Game was penalized for his public display of kinship with a departing Scott Hall and Kevin Nash (WATCH) ? and it was alongside HBK, who not only emerged from the situation unscathed but also managed to soar to even greater heights.</p><p>Given his history, someone had to stand in Michaels? way. The Hit Man was in the position to do so before leaving and he tried his damndest to serve Shawn a healthy, much needed dose of humility.</p><p>After watching the ?Shawn vs. Bret? DVD, an appreciation of the two-sided story makes way to empathy for each competitor and their viewpoint. As the fan who witnessed a tainted end to Bret Hart?s in-ring career in WWE in ?97, there comes acceptance, closure and, most importantly from my perspective, justification of my support of "The Best There Is, Best There Was and Best There Ever Will Be."</p> <p><img alt="" class="right" src="http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2011/10/hartinseats268.jpg" />History cannot be changed, but no matter how strongly one might feel about what happened 14 years ago, it?s necessary to distance the events of Nov. 9, 1997 from the illustrious Hall of Fame careers of both Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. Arguably either man?s darkest hour in the ring, the Montreal Screwjob cannot ? and should not ? eclipse the accolades and achievements for which these legends are celebrated.</p><blockquote readability="4.8421052631579"><p><em>What about Shawn Michaels' side? "Suburgatory" at 8:30 was up 10 percent, scoring a 3.4/9 in the demographic with 9.8 million total viewers. "Revenge" at 10 was up 12 percent, receiving a 2.8/7 and 8.7 million total viewers. The bumps for "The Middle," "Suburgatory" and "Happy Endings" boosted all three shows to series highs in both the demographic and total viewership.</p> <p> The network scored an overall ratings win for the night with an average 3.3/9, though CBS was the night's most-watched network with an average 10.6 million total viewers.</p> <p> CBS aired "Survivor" at 8, which scored a 3.4/10 in the demo and 11.5 million total viewers, which made it the most-watched program of the night. After "Survivor" it aired repeats.</p> <p> The CW enjoyed growth throughout the evening, with "America's Next Top Model" at 9 hitting a high for the current cycle, growing 11 percent over last week for a 1.0/3 and 2.2 million total viewers, while a repeat of "Ringer" at 8 remained flat with a 0.4/1 but increased its total viewership by 13 percent for 1.3 million total viewers.</p> <p> In lieu of the postponed World Series, Fox ran "Glee" repeats. The manic 2D fighting game will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, and upcoming PS Vita handheld. The home console versions will hit store shelves this November for $39.99, with the Vita version following in early 2012.</p> The highly acclaimed fighting game adds 12 new fighters to the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster, bringing the total overall roster of characters up to a whopping 50. New to the Marvel side is Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Iron Fist, Nova, and the obscure Rocket Raccoon. Team Capcom sees Firebrand, Frank West, Nemesis Type-T, Phoenix Wright, Strider, and Vergil.<p>In addition to characters, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 features a host of enhancements and new features to improve the game?s balance and online functionality. One of the biggest additions to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the fan-requested Spectator Mode, which allows fighters to watch live online matches together. The recently announced Heroes and Heralds mode is a single and multi-player, team-based contest where gamers earn new abilities with upgrade cards by battling Galactus' heralds.</p> <p>With multiple improvements and 12 new characters, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 looks to keep the fighting flame burning this fall.</p> </span> <!-- <ul class="subscribe-panel"> <script type = "text/javascript" > $(document).ready(function() { $("a.retweet").bind("click", function(event) { var shortUrl = 'http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395291,00.asp'; reported a $1.1 billion third-quarter profit Wednesday that beat expectations because of strong growth in its defense business.</p> <p>Boeing's revenue is split between defense and commercial airplanes. It benefits from having one foot in civilian aerospace and one in government-funded military contracts. When there's a downturn in one, the company still has a shot at profits in the other. Weapons demand in the Middle East and South Asia is helping to offset flat to potentially lower defense spending in the U.S., said Jim McNerney, Boeing's chairman and CEO.</p> <p>Meanwhile, profits from Boeing's passenger jet business grew, although more slowly. It also cut its forecast for deliveries of its two newest jets, including the much-anticipated 787.</p> <p>Boeing's overall net income rose 31 percent. Profit of $1.46 per share beat analyst expectations, while revenue rose 4 percent to $17.73 billion.</p> <p>Boeing's defense division generated operating earnings of $824 million, up 20 percent. Profits for military aircraft, computer and space systems, and defense services all rose. Boeing makes the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter, the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, and the F/A-18 Hornet fighter.</p> <p>Defense contractors Lockheed Martin Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp. also reported strong third-quarter earnings Wednesday. Executives at those companies also said future defense spending is likely to be flat.</p> <p>Earnings at Boeing Commercial Airplanes rose 7 percent to $1.09 billion.</p> <p>Boeing is trying to get its 787 production up to speed after years of delays. It said it will now deliver 15 to 20 of its new 787s and 747-8s this year. But that is 10 fewer than previously expected. Of those, no more than seven will be 787s, which are built of lightweight materials that promise to dramatically improve fuel efficiency. Boeing said it is taking longer than expected to rework the first 787s, called Dreamliners, to fix early production problems.</p> <p>The 747-8 is a new version of Boeing's iconic superjumbo jet that is longer and can carry more cargo and passengers. Boeing has delivered a cargo version and plans to deliver a passenger version next year</p> <p>The Dreamliner finally carried its first passengers Wednesday. Japan's All Nippon Airways took travelers on a four-hour flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong.</p> <p>The jet has a list price of $193 million, but production delays mean that early models are costing Boeing more to make than they bring in. The shortfall will begin to close around the time Boeing makes 10 per month, said James Bell, Boeing's president and chief financial officer.</p> <p>Boeing said it will spread out production costs over the first 1,100 planes it makes.</p> <p>Boeing said it expects to take about 10 years to make those 1,100 planes. It plans to reach 10 per month by 2013, a faster rate than anyone has ever built such a large plane before. It is now accelerating assembly to 2.5 per month.</p> <p>Boeing raised its full-year forecast to $4.30 to $4.40 per share from $3.90 to $4.10 per share.</p> <p>Boeing shares rose $2.84, or 4.5 percent, to close at $66.56.</p><p>Source: <a
