MBB: Washington State gets 81-76 win over Oregon State

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Pac-12 basketball teams play 18 league games, but Washington State coach Ken Bone said he feared an 0-2 start in conference play might prove fatal to the Cougars.

Brock Motum helped calm Bone's fears by recording team highs of 26 points and eight rebounds in an 81-76 win over Oregon State on Saturday at Spokane Arena.

"If we come out and we're flat or we just don't play well, then maybe we aren't that good," Bone said. "We kind of put it on our shoulders and put the onus on us as a team and as a staff: `Can we get the job done?' The guys did a nice job."

DaVonte Lacy scored 18 points for the Cougars (9-5, 1-1 Pac-12), who have won seven of their past eight games.

Jared Cunningham led Oregon State (10-4, 0-2) with 21 points. Backcourt partner Ahmad Starks scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half. Joe Burton added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Bone said Saturday's game represented "a real test of our character" after the Cougars opened Pac-12 play with a dismal performance Thursday in a 92-75 loss to the Oregon Ducks.

"They came out and smacked us," said WSU point guard Reggie Moore.

Moore was crucial to Saturday's win. He handled Oregon State's pressure defense expertly, making just one turnover in 35 minutes. He also scored eight points and handed out a season-high nine assists.

"He had great composure," Bone said.

Motum, a 6-foot-10 junior from Australia, worked well inside and from the perimeter. He was 10 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 5 on 3-pointers, and finished one short of his career high of 27 points. Motum scored WSU's first nine points.

"He's a competitor," Bone said. "He understands what was at stake."

Motum said he shared Bone's concern about the impact of an 0-2 start in league play. Motum said the Oregon State game represented a "gut check, and I thought we pulled through really well and came together as a team, shared the ball and played the right way. It was fun."

Washington State led almost all the way, but the Cougars had to deliver at the free-throw line in the final two minutes to clinch the game. Oregon State trailed only 77-74 after Starks hit his fifth 3-pointer with 51 seconds to go.

"We have the ability to fight back," Starks said. "We showed some toughness, but we need to start earlier."

Washington State shot 54 percent from the field, including 50 percent (6 of 12) on 3-pointers. Oregon State shot 46 percent.

The Beavers started the day ranked first in the Pac-12 and eighth in NCAA Division I in scoring, averaging 83.2 points per game. The Beavers were leading the league and tied for fourth nationally with 10.1 steals per game. They had 10 more Saturday, including four apiece by Cunningham and Starks.

"Jared's super fast," Starks said. "He anticipates a lot of things."

Yet Another Case of "Think Before You Tweet" ? NASCAR Driver Disgusts Breastfeeding Advocates With Twitter Rant

Breasts. We see them everywhere, nowadays. Television, movies, magazines ? they're pretty much impossible to miss, even if you try really hard. NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne is probably a fan himself, but he managed to find at least one set to be offensive enough to turn 'em into a personal PR nightmare.

Kahne infuriated the nursing-friendly masses when he tweeted his uncensored opinion regarding a mother breastfeeding her son at a grocery store. Apparently, "One boob put away one boob hanging" was so offensive to him that he felt it warranted international publicity. After referencing the incident as "nasty," he claimed that he no longer felt like shopping or eating after witnessing the public display of nudity. The Twitter debacle escalated when one of Kahne's followers begged to differ with his opinion (using some mild profanity), to which he responded with more profanity. As you can imagine, nursing advocates and people in general are angry about his attitude and the way he handled himself on Twitter.

So, here's what I don't understand about this situation (aside from the disgustingly rude commentary): guys are supposed to like boobs, right? It seems to me that spotting one out in public would count as a freebie, of sorts. I'm not saying that this woman couldn't have benefited from the use of a nice nursing cover, but I find it hard to believe that it's any more offensive to witness a mother breastfeeding her child than it is to see the backsides of people who can't be bothered to wear belts or pants that fit (I saw at least four today in public places).

It remains to be seen how Kahne's reputation will be affected by this rant, if at all. There are certainly plenty of people who agree with his point of view, even if it was expressed in a tactless manner. He has already issued a formal apology, of course, which was clearly written by a seasoned publicist if the correct use of grammar and punctuation are indicators.

APNewsBreak: Russell Brand, Katy Perry to divorce (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? British actor-comedian Russell Brand is divorcing "California Gurls" songstress Katy Perry after 14 months of what had appeared to be one of Hollywood's happier marriages.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Brand said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Brand, 36, offered no other details, but in papers filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, he cited irreconcilable differences.

He and the 27-year-old pop singer were married in October 2010 at a resort inside a tiger reserve in India, and their mutual affection had become a rather sweet feature of the celebrity circuit.

The couple announced their engagement in January 2010 after meeting at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Brand hosted and she performed.

The comedian, who once struggled with substance abuse and sex addiction, was effusive about his bride while promoting projects earlier this year, saying marrying Perry has "given me much more strength in what I do."

"For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really," he said in March. "Now I think, well, whatever I do, I'll just go back to her, and that's incredibly comforting."

Perry praised her husband backstage at the 2011 VMAs in August, where she won three awards and he offered a tribute to Amy Winehouse.

"I'm proud of him, whatever comes out of his mouth, and sometimes it's very colorful, right?" Perry said of Brand. "That's why I married him, because he's smart and I learn a lot."

Attorneys for Perry, whose name is listed as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in the divorce papers, did not respond Friday to calls seeking comment.

The Internet had been abuzz recently with rumors about possible trouble for the couple after they were seen during the holidays without their wedding rings.

Perry's run of No. 1 singles earned her the distinction of becoming MTV's first artist of the year earlier this month. She hosted "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 10 and gave no indication any marital woes.

Brand's recent film credits include "Arthur," "Hop" and "Get Him to the Greek." He is among the ensemble starring alongside Tom Cruise in "Rock of Ages," set for release next year.

Both Brand and Perry were absent Friday from Twitter, where they often shared kind words for each other.
